Either way, Thatanos is gone. Permenant Ban. Either a) he hacked another user's account on my forum, gave himself money, or b) he failed to report an irregularity in distribution of funds.

Either one will not fly. So that's decided. Council or not Council.

As for Raven....

Can we check IPs and login times? If Thatanos immediatly logged back in after using Raven's account (if that is the case, as I'd like to think it is) he probably wouldn't have reset his IP.

I doubt Thatanos could've hacked phpBB itself, but he could've pulled a social engineering trick on Raven or something of the sort. Of course, there's the chance Raven could've done this for him, but it seems a bit out of character for her.

DP, my computer didn't save the conversation he had with me yesterday but the short version is that he offered me one soul if I'd sell 1 share of BSD because he was 'collecting' stock and wanted some of it. He was also boasting about how many shares he had.

I refused as I thought there was something strange about it (and I wasn't overly keen to sell my stock). It did seem strange to me that someone could be on Blackstar enough to earn the kind of money he was implying he had without me knowing who they were, but I never had time to investigate properly.

Raven's back on the EC site and she says she's doesn't know a thing. Apparently, she's been grounded the whole time, and she's got Thanatos blocked on MSN. Any ideas?

I'd like to add some notes to the conversation, if I may. I suspected Raven of doing something like this initially before I realized the scope, because she had pulled a similar prank in the past on the EC site.

However, I don't believe she's responsible in this case.

1. She didn't gain anything.
2. Raven hasn't shown much interest in collecting or Items.
3. She hasn't been active on Blackstar recently.
4. It's out of character for her.
5. Thatanos didn't even attempt to defend himself when told he was banned permanently, which to me implies guilt.

Well, at least we can give a sigh of relief that Raven really is innocent. I knew Thantanos was trouble, but, that much of a nuisance is fairly annoying to be quite honest.

Are we absolutely sure he's not just going to get a new comp, or run the net through his mums comp and start pissing around with blackstar again...?

The IP, or Internet Protocol Address (The A is usually infered), is a 4-byte number used to identify a computer on the internet. For example, [url]64.91.253.126[/url] is Inkwell's IP Address. Servers aren't the only things with IP addresses. Users have IP addresses too. Take DP's for example: 12.218.71.24 (I presume this is alright, but I'll remove it if not). The IP address can be used to get a user's ISP's (or Internet Service Provider) name, among other things.

All internet-bound 'packets' (Packets contain data, sorta like an internet postcard. They're used to send webpages and the like between computers) contain a receiving IP at the very least, from what I know. The IP is used to tell computers where to send the packet. Most packets also have a return IP address, which is used to tell a computer where to send the reply to a packet.

As most (if not all) HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol. A Protocol is sorta like a language computers use to communicate over the internet) 'packets' include a return IP address, it is possible to filter out and ignore packets from certain IP addresses, much like a spam filter (only more complex). That is called an IP ban.

As a moderator, we have access to people's IP addresses. However, we should try to avoid distributing IP addresses out of the moderator-only forum without a good reason (IE: A user has commited a crime), as an IP address can be used to hack into another's computer. Whilst a hacker could just hack into Inkwell, it's still possible (and indeed likly in the case of another like Thanatos) for a hacker to take an IP address and use a prescripted (IE premade) exploit to take over a computer and cause major, potentially irreversible damage.

The phrase 'script kiddie' is applied to a hacker who hijacks a computer system using a prescripted exploit (hence the name). These hackers don't need to be particularly smart to gain access to a system, and because of this they are usually dumb enough to cause severe harm to a system without thinking of the potential consequences.

...What do you mean hot water from his ISP? Surely you don't intend to send that to his ISP? That seems a bit harsh. Then again, it'd be a way to let his parents know, which is probably one of the most moral ways to deal with him.

But you never truely appreciate IP addresses until you have to break down and analyze them. By hand.

And Net, ir's already done. He had an account, email, and IP ban...and the IP ban doesn't let him access anything on inkwell, not just Blackstar.

I should also note that such an activity as he admited to right there is a violation of almost all ISP's Terms of Service agreement. These ISP's depend on us webmasters and site administrators to enforce this. Plus it's the most legal way to get him in trouble with his parents. Harsh, maybe, but he'd think twice about hacking while he's grounded and his entire family has no internet.

Plus as a Computer Engineer, True Hacker, and all around Geek, script kiddies pi$$ the hell out of me.

Edit: and that is my IP address, but you can't get access to any one computer from that unless I tell my router to let you. and ropservenet.homeip.net is much easier to remember

Edit 2: That is also the same IP address he made 204 post from over the lifetime of his account (which is about halfway down the member list, or bottom of page 1)
