Probably not as cool as the name makes it sound.
Nintendo Official Magazine (UK) have a section along with the letters page for covering stuff that happens in their forums and one of my comments, which happens to be partially about Blackstar got published!
Sadly I didn't mention the forum by name for some stupid reason, but then I didn't know it was gonna be published and it seemed off topic.
Anyhoo, here's the quote:
(Pie chart of the results of a poll on 'Do graphics really matter?', 58% Not really, 22% No, 20% Yes.)
Danikat said: "I'd say no. I've managed to get by quite happily for several years as a member of a forum that does text-based sci-fi role-playing. No graphics at all but the games are still a lot of fun. That's not to say graphics don't add anything - good graphics can add a lot to a game. But where a great storyline and fun gameplay can make up for bad graphics great graphics can't make up for an unoriginal and boring game." _________________ Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve ~ Sir Walter Scott

Wow, Nintendo power? Really?
I am personally surprised. I also wish I still got that magazine... |

Actually, it's Nintendo Official Magazine. Nintendo Power is a different entity entirely, not available over in this fair land of Albion- erm, the UK.
I used to get it semi-regularly but I've kind of drifted away from Nintendo's consoles recently. I'm just less and less satisfied with the casual approach they're taking, I guess. Makes me wish I'd jumped trains at the start of this console generation. When most of the games that you want based off ads and reviews and opinion are for any console but yours, you know you made a bad decision somewhere. :/
that and I guess I've drifted into PC gaming which is funny because I have a Mac which is not exactly conducive for the whole PC gaming thing - oh well, the joys of dual booting
EDIT: And on reflection it's perhaps best you didn't. Who knows what the repercussions could have been? The traffic might have overwhelmed the servers or something. ...Ack, there's that elitist side I haven't excised showing up again. Bad Cirr! Bad!
EDIT EDIT: I went to a talk by a Dr. Richard Bartle (who is currently my lecturer for my games design module at uni) where he stated that text-based games could have far better graphics than actually graphics-based games ever could. I personally agree on this, but I would have added the condition "if the players have more imagination than a brick". >_> _________________ This is a signature that states a new signature shall be coming at some point in the future. I used to get that magazine back in the day... feels like many, many years ago now. I doubt it's changed much.

You should do what I do - buy all of the consoles In all seriousness though I wish I didn't get an Xbox 360. Much happier with my PS3. I've even started to trade in my old Xbox 360 games - very uncharacteristic of me.

Whilst I agree that recent games have been cornered into a 'OMG we needs better graphics' phase, I can't 100% agree that the text-based games were any good. To me the games of old feel really good thinking back but when I try to replay some of those games I think to myself: 'Did I really play these? They're not really that great...'. Of course there are some exceptions - I still have fun playing Dungeon Keeper when I blow the dust off my CDROM (and if I can actually get it to work) and Diablo is pretty epic. In conclusion, some games are good, some games are not! (Well, duh). The End.
Maybe I should think twice before posting this late... _________________

Dungeon Keeper is legendary, even though I've never finished either of them. When I have a PC again I might play it.
I should probably have added that text based games only work when your playing with other people. Anyone ever played any of those old text based RPGs? The ones where (in the words of Strong Bad) you type 'get ye flask' and it says 'you cannot get ye flask' and you have to sit there and try to imagine why you cannot get ye flask. Although that might be more down to bad game design than anything. _________________ Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve ~ Sir Walter Scott

Hey. Good IF (interactive fiction) is good regardless of the limited capacities of the medium. (If you're curious about interactive fiction, it's not exactly very newbie friendly but I'd highly recommend The Chinese Room if you have even a passing familiarity with philosophical thought experiments such as the aforementioned Chinese Room.)
If anything, I've had more experience with these single player text games than multiplayer ones. Mostly because the IF I've played tended to all be Inform-based and therefore have similar commands, and have been able to parse commands a little better than I've seen most MUDs can. _________________ This is a signature that states a new signature shall be coming at some point in the future. And it's that sort of humour that kept me playing
I think the upgraded text games were better! (Point n' Click ). At least then you could see why you couldn't get 'ye flask'. _________________

Leisure Suit Larry? You mean that god awful 'game' which is basically a bunch of weird (not good weird, like fl0w), vaguely sexually related puzzle games set to the tune of bad music and even worse attempts at humour? *shakes head*
The forum being mentioned in NOM is pretty awesome though. Excellent _________________ Baker of the radioactive three-eyed flying purple cookie eating brownies!

Ahh, I see. I'd just like to mention that I've never played or even heard of the earlier ones. So that should give people an idea of just how bad this one is.
Though I do obviously play the more recent games, I still can't help but play some of my older games, like StarCraft plus Brood Wars, Aliens VS Predator, Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri, Trespasser, Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn plus Throne of Bhaal expansion, and of course Creatures _________________ Baker of the radioactive three-eyed flying purple cookie eating brownies!

Yeah... because the first one obviously isn't worthy of your attention _________________

Lol, no. Because I don't have it-my brother does. And when I discovered Amazon and eBay I'd long since come to the conclusion that I'd never finish the one I had so I had no chance of finishing both (and to date I still haven't ).
Besides, it's fun walking round the world with a main char that has amnesia and constant headaches.
Oh I forgot to mention, I have Dungeon Keeper 2 (which I also haven't finished) but not 1.
Come to think of it the only game out of that lot that I have finished is StarCraft... I think I see a pattern here... _________________ Baker of the radioactive three-eyed flying purple cookie eating brownies!

Don't feel too bad, I'm just the same. I end up getting a game, playing it until almost completion then find out another game has come out that I need to play. Especially really long games (why are RPGs sooo long).
The best Baldur's Gate type game I've found is Dungeon Siege - it just seems to have a simpler system meaning I manage to complete it in my lifetime instead of wasting away trying to get through Baldur's Gate. I never completed either of the BGs... or Neverwinter Nights come to think of it _________________
