I am oft wont to ruminate on past goings on, and so I re-read our stories as I reflect on previous role-plays. I look back and see all the errors of the past, all the past typos and grammatical abortions.

I begin to wonder - it is right of one such as myself to look back and edit these slights against our present reputation? To preserve the spirit of a story but refine bad diction or clumsy prose? Or would that be an unforgivable meddling in imperfect past glories to satisfy present vanity?

I'm sure, if I had my way, I'd go back and correct everything. If I could be bothered to. The odd typo here and there, the awkward phrasings so common in about one out of every... uh... one post I make. I don't see clarification as something that can ever be wrong - misleading to those viewing past messages, but the "Edited on such-and-such time" message instantly reveals you as someone who has tweaked their posts.

Unless you're one (such as me) who never gets that message any more, in which case I exploit that like heck and edit my posts about five or six times after posting them. >_> I'm picky, what can I say?

However, with my personal tangently-related-to-Blackstar-through-my-characters universe changing and changing outside of Blackstar, forming several inconsistencies, I do read past posts and realise how inaccurate they are relating to current characters and situations. Some of it is development, to be expected, while other errors are mostly due to me forgetting something that seemed clear at the time.

One thing I find is the second I make a post with a new character, the profile I lovingly and achingly constructed for that character is probably completely inaccurate. I never stick to the original personality summaries I come up with and so I've tried to make them pretty vague. As for history, well, forget about it. None of the active characters I have has had a consistent fixed backstory for very long. Aurichalcite excepted, but given as that's my newest character it's only a matter of time before I retroactively change that as well.

...I'm drifting dangerously off topic now, and back on the topic of purely fixing typographical errors, I see no reason why not to. Sure, it may be self-serving to make yourself appear immune to the odd human error, but this is a forum, not a chat room. Posts are expected to be somewhat more thoughtfully constructed than a rapid-fire real-time sentence.

Or perhaps I'm a perfectionist with high standards. Still, an interesting issue.

I have learnt so much about how to roleplay since I arrived: Most noticeably, how to spell and the use of grammar.

Do what you must with the worst of them if you so chose, because personally I'm somewhat scared of how bad some of mine were. around about now, they seem to be a pretty good reason to strive for improvement, to become better then how you were once.

Then again, I do my best to avoid my earlier posts. They really are horrific pieces of work.

I'm of two minds about this. On the one hand I can understand the desire to correct mistakes, but on the other hand I feel like it's a part of the history - being able to compare the mistakes made in the past to the present shows us how far we've come. Like the shocking amount of power-playing in the Forum Wars (which from what I remember was actually relatively sensible compared to some RP's of that era).

I suppose I'd say as a general rule if you know something was a genuine mistake then it's ok to correct it, but if it was a matter of not knowing any better (poor sentance structure would probably be the most common one in this catergory) I'd be inclined to recommend keeping it for the sake of comparison.

This is why I always avoided setting out a history for my characters. It sometimes gets a little tricky when it comes to motivation, but the flexibility makes it worth while. It's suprisingly easy to get around simply by making them someone who doesn't talk about their past - if no one's supposed to know what they did before arriving here then you don't need to tell anyone.

Personally, if it's something happening in the present or near-past I have no problem editing bad grammar, missing words and typos (as I've been doing with my more recent posts in the Corrupted Cave, sorry about that guys) as it tends to annoy me, especially bad spelling.
But when it comes to re-reading past roleplays I tend to leave them alone. It's useful for one and often shows how excited I was at certain parts as words went on walks a lot during that excitement.

I regret nothing.

Edit: Actually, I do regret something. I regret insulting embri on the Felbeasts private forums (When they existed) and blame myself for the dissapearance of one of your admins.

[CP Edit] That last comment was not cool man. By any standards. This is your warning.
