DLM's topic on playing Doom II multiplayer made me realise. Does Blackstar actually have an official/unofficial policy on piracy/warez discussions and the like? Do we ignore them, or support them, or delete them, or what? Not that DLM's encouraging piracy (quite the opposite), it just raised the question in my head.
I did some searching on the forum to see if this has been discussed before but I couldn't find anything. _________________ This is a signature that states a new signature shall be coming at some point in the future. I don't think Blackstar at all encourages this.
The only thing I think would be if someone hacked a ROM and completely redid it. I think that would be ok.

Afaik we don't mind if people talk about it, just so long as they don't openly encourage others to do it (ie: sharing links, etc.) DLM's Doom II thread is fine imo, as he's made it perfectly clear that people can't ask him for illegal copies of the game.

That sounds like a nasty little combination of piracy and plagiarism, why's that okay? _________________ If I'm not here, I'm probably over at...

Huh, I always thought it came under the 'Do Not Ever Do' category, in the directly linking/encouraging context. But as for actual discussion, I don't know.
What about debates over whether it is or isn't a good or bad or neither thing?
Are we talking about the former or the latter here? I don't think it'd be right us deleting one where people are just talking about the pros/cons of it .

You mean like the Streets of Rage Remix someone made? The story is completely the makers own, but things like the music have been tweaked to sound as it should have sound, the levels have been redesigned, weapons and characters etc have been added, tweaked, and cleaned up, yet it still pays homage to the originals?
However, I was under the impression that in order to have something like that legally you had to already own the original. There was a DOOM the movie fan re-make I found that got rid of all the stupid parts of the story and gave you what any DOOM 3 player (which the movie had supposedly been based on) had actually wanted-a horrifying experience on Mars that was never supposed to have been explained by a chromosome from ancient aliens . But there was also a warning that you had to own the original or you'd get in trouble for having this, since this was a fanedit. _________________ Baker of the radioactive three-eyed flying purple cookie eating brownies!

Sorry I should have explained myself more 3kul. Some games (Pokemon for example) have people who hack the roms of the old games and completely re-do them, changing the story, sprites, everything really, or just small things, to remake the game only using the engine.
I have always believed that was ok, because these talented people have usually spent YEARS re-making these games.

As far as I know using anything you don't own the copyright to without permission from the owner is illigal, no matter how much additional work you put into it.
So even just using the engine and creating a completely new game is technically illigal, it's just less likely that anyone will notice or care so they're much more likely to get away with it.
Having said that I don't think there should be any problem with talking about it, as long as it's not thinly veiled advertising or directly providing links to illigal software. _________________ Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve ~ Sir Walter Scott
