Origin of names

[Danikat]

Well the first one of these I'm sure most of you have heard before:

Danikat - a mash up of Danielle, my RPG character and only online persona when I joined the CC and Katy, my real name.
Originally it was just a screen name but when I started RP'ing I didn't think to give my character a new name and I'm too attatched to her to change it now. (She only became part cat later through sheer impulse when I was drawing her.)

The part a lot of people don't know is that she has a second name - Aurorel.
It's a combination of two words - the Latin aurora meaning 'light' or 'dawn' and the Quenyan (Elvish) word Elen, or el as a suffix, meaning 'star'.
So Dawn Star. In my own personal mythology it's a title given to certian individuals who seek to bring about certian changes in the world around them. You'll probably get to know the full story eventually but not just yet.

Alzaranth - Doesn't mean anything as far as I know. All Pernese dragon names end in th and I've always liked ones that start with A, other than that I just made it up in my head as far as I remember. It's remarkably similar to the name of Torene's (the first Benden Weyrwoman) dragon, Alaranth but I didn't actually know that when I came up with Alzaranth.

Veamoth - Adapted from the word behemoth, intended to imply his purpose as a weapon and power as such. Also I was playing a lot of Heros of Might And Magic III at the time and the behemoth's were one of my favourite units.

Lopp - Just a name I liked the sound of. Unlike dragons fire-lizards are named by their owners and can be called anything. In this case it doesn't mean anything.

Arian - Welsh for silver or money. Chosen because I liked the word and it suits him, since he's silver. I don't know if anyones realised but the few armadillos who are named all have welsh names, all of which mean something appropriate.

Well, a lot of names I have no idea for the origins for... I just pull them from my head and away I go.

My Elvish ones however, involve looking through an Elvish wordlist and pulling out cool words or words that describe the character. Most I don't remember off the top of my head, but my APs I do.


Tel'Erusva - The One Broken
Tel = The, Er = One, Usva = Broken
Because I had so many APs... and yet none represented just me, so I adopted this name to cover it.

Intyalle I can't tell you the meaning of, as I am not allowed to share my real name and it is the Quenyan equivalent of it.

Melanaur - Love Fire
Mel = to love (a indicates present participle), Naur - fire (the first word I memorised, predictably )
Originally Melanaur was just a pyromaniac fire mage, so this was he best name for here.

Agarwala - Blood Lust
Agar = Blood, Rwal = to lust
No noun for lust, so I came as close as I could for my fight-loving AP. Originally Agarwale, but I eventually decided it was the wrong participle and changed it.

Noldokuruni - Wise Witch
Noldo = Wise, Kuruni = Witch
Not sure how I decided on wise, I think I just liked the sound when combined with witch.

Kathkantavaria - Cat Shape Weave
Kath = Cat, Canta = Shape, Vari = to weave
The closest I could get to shape shifter.

Eldalie - Elf
One of several words for Elf, actually, I just liked that one best.

All the rest have much more boring names.

=_= I got the name Maraha by brutally beating my norns while repeating my true name, and they all squeaked pitifully 'Mah-rah-hah!' before expiring.

Triste? Is french. For what I can't remember, I just typed in random depressing things into Babelfish and clicked 'Translate'.

Contra- I slaughtered Contradiction, because of her looks, backstory, etc etc... I've got a headache, no need for details, right?

Lord Arachna- Spiders and such... Arachnaphobia, which is one phobia which I lack, thank BOB.

As we're doing character names, and this is me... this could take a while

Dragon_Mutant - came about because I made her and I needed a 'codename' for her on the site she was originally created, but all the cooler draconic titles had been taken already. So I kept it simple.

Blue - Is partly due to my own sense of irony, DM's eyes were bright blue before they mutated and became draconic and yellow. So her actual name is Blue, though she doesn't have a last name.

Harpy - Her codename is taken from the mythical half-birds of greek legend that devoured people and were generally evil, as her mutation gave her the ability to become a giant gold eagle and she has several bird like traits when human. I suppose she was always destined to become the homicidal meanie she is now.

Azaria Leonards - Harpy's true name, her first name I got off a girl I met at college who's name I thought was cool, so I asked if I could use it for a character. She said fine as long as it's a villain, so after Harpy went through character development and became evil she got it. Leonards - I can't remember why I gave her this last name, it was probably just random.

Fade - So called because of her abilities, as she got them before her name.

Sophie Rrennll - Fades actual name, Sophie because you wouldn't expect an assassin to have such a sweet and innocent name, and Rrennll I made up, though it's taken from a previous story-characters last name.

Tala Lupe - I looked for 'wolf' names on the net and found these. Since Lupe looked far more like a last name than a forename she got that. Tala means 'brown wolf'.

Syllak Draco - Syllak I made up, the first three letters are taken from my first name, and the 'ak' on the end taken from her species, the sivak. Draco simply because she is a Draconian.

Nola - Her name was suggested to me by GBE, I couldn't think of anything else for her at the time.

Kalat - His name was the result of my phones predictive text, though forsome reason whatever it was I was writing kept being translated to 'Lakat'. I switch the K and L around and it fitted much better.

Endorphine - He was named this because his main abilities focus on endorphins, but endorphin reminds me of dolphins for some reason so the 'e' was added to try and make him sound a little more alienplantjellyfish like. (Yes, that string of words is delibereate )

Sallah Kleh - Sallah is a fire-lizard inspired from the same Pern books Danikats dragons are from, and I didn't realise at the time but Sallah is the name of one of the original colonies scientists. Kleh was added because I thought she needed somethig else in her, though you could say I just the 'a' from the tea called 'klah'.

Kheesth - She's an interesting one, I couldn't think of a name so I asked GBE for help as I'd been collaborating with him in making her anyway. He gave me the first letter and I wanted it to sound almost like you had to hiss to pronounce it, so 'Kheesth' came about. (All the Tezcan names, Teesn, Nrenth and Seegk follow the same basic pattern as Kheesths. You can almost pronounce them )

Tezca - Tezca is from a word for 'old serpent', though I can't remember what the entire thing was exactly.

Grarg - Grarg is a grendel, and the first female grendel I ever had was named Grarg so I used it for my first grendel character.

Brock - Brock was named by SFOT , originally he was just 725 what with him being introduced as a BorgNorn character.

Hathor and Baldur, the Creature goddess of Love and Nature and Creature god of peace were created in the same RP as the above two and were given to me by Nasari.

Tina - Given to the experimental soldier because I couldn't think of anything else at the time and she is more of a scout than bulked up soldier so a more powerful name wouldn't have cut it.

Lykaios - I found this name at the same time as I foud Tala Lupes, though the actual characters creation came much later. Lykaios means 'wandering wolf'

Zila - the reptilian morphffer was named after my Baldurs gate half elf character, since she vaguely reminds me of her.

Furnace - He was called this because I haven't actually heard of a dragon called Furnace before, even though lots of them are named after fire in some way.

Inferno - the name is off my first dragon villain and second oldest ever villain, so it suits the Elder of the Dark Fire Dragons.

Ebony - Simply because of her black scales.

Blaze - Blaze is named after another dragon from a previous story.

Coro - I had to think hard for this one, Coro is from 'Corona' which is what you can see when you blot out the main body of the sun. I had to make it sound more masculine though so Coro came about.

Karen - Just a random, normal name for a not so normal human.

Kelly - Another fairly normal human name for an inhuman little girl.

Zarleran - Zarleran is a name I made up for the symbiote once she gained sentience, there's no real meaning behind it.

Aura - Means 'wind' which is what her power is.

Ordell - Another name provided by GBE, what it means I don't know, if it does mean anything.

Paola - Means 'little woman' since she's the silver equivalent of her mother in looks.

Goldfeather - She's a gold coloured griffin, what more can I say?

Lilic Aerith KanKaren - This is my very first character. Her first name is how I used to spell Lilac(And still do mind you) for the Lilac tree or a Lilac flow, it's just how I have spelled it for years, the middle name comes from FF7 the girl in pink (No I have not played FF7) and her last name is from another rp's characters who told me to use the one name as my own person(Thank you to Ben, even though he's not on this site.)

Lily Ares KanKaren - Her first name is also from a flower, (popular trend in my starting character names)Twin sister to Lilic it's only natural I gave her a nother L flowered name and all I could think of at that time was Lily. The Ares is again like that of Lilic's and her last name is because of the family.

Sostila - Her name is because I pushed a bunch of random letters together, another popular trend in my newer characters, I made it up I don't remember much on her right now so yeah...Lol.

Rose - Yes, yet another flower name, she is not of the KanKaren line however, but she was one of my first characters so her name, obviously in my trends, resides with the actual name of the red romantic flower, the rose.

Light - This is the stupidest name, I know about that. How this one came into being was simple, I had a lack of names and I chose this. for reference, no this is not off of Death Note, I made this name up before I saw the Death Note episode (Yes Kazumaru, it's just one episode that I saw.)

Coltra - This name is still a mystery to me some days on how I came up with it, it was not letter smashing and she is not from any flower that I can think of. I do, however, remember I was trying ot think of names and I somehow thought of the name Coltra. So that is how she got her name.

Colt - simply put, I snagged this off his sister , Coltra, took off the 'ra' and it became Colt. That's about all I can give you on Colt, heh.

[Arthur McCorth]

I have a strong suspicion that a lot of people believe my screen name to be my real name.

In part that assumption is correct, for Arthur is indeed my name out in the wide world yonder.

My second name however is a work of pure fiction, inspired by the name of an older character.

Arthur is a Gaelic name meaning 'Bear', or so I am told. For myself I do not know why I was given that name, I assume my parents liked it.

McCorth does not mean anything special.
