Do you know that if the Earth was any other shape than an elipse, at it's current rate of rotation it would tear itself apart? I say elipse because the earth isn't perfectly round, although close to it. therefore I think Au'Marui would make blackstar eliptical - it would take alot of force to hold blackstar together otherwise.

But then againt that would explain DoaG fairly well.

Then again, Blackstar is a place where paint cans and fruits and vegetables of all varieties rain from the skies, and where the most convenient form of transport involves ripping holes in the fabric of the space-time continuum.
Not to mention the transdimensional cave, deep in the middle of a forest, which is presumably far bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.
Oh, and the intrustions and meddlings of those part of the Pantheon, let's not forget about that.

A non-oblate-spheroid planet wouldn't exactly be too clashing, any more than the stuff listed above would be. Very Happy And as for keeping the world together, does Blackstar even exist in the same physical universe as the Earth or in its own system of physics altogether?

I always believed that it was indeed in a completely separate realm, because the same one Earth is in couldn't possible hold that much insanity.

Agreed. Although both maps look pretty damn nice and I wouldn't complain at either, the cube one just seems to suit this alternate reality more. However, it is DP's realm, he can shape it (or make Embri shape it :p) as he sees fit.

+1 Photoshop CS
+1 iMac G5
+1 Wacom Tablet
+ Stubborn determination
+ passable artistic talent
+ 60 or so hours of pixel pushing

If you want that in more technical terms... there was no airbrush involved, just a bunch of custom patterns (which I built to make the map) some reference pics, a hand drawn outline, and lots and lots of time. I've got in progress shots of most of the work, so at some point I may put it together into something that shows in pictures how it came together. Oh. And layers. Lots and lots of layers. And backups.

Nothing is worse than not having backups... Shocked

I wouldn't be surprised if Blackstar was shaped like a Klein Bottle, although it would probably be a such a pain to make, I'd rather not ask our no-longer-mystery artist to make it unless everyone agrees not to blame me for any dire consequenses. Wink

Also, I'm glad we finally have an oceon. BEACH PARTY!

It's been hypothesized by many of Psychotopia's leading scientists that the planet actually occupies all potential shapes at any one time... but the more likely scenario is that lifeforms react badly when their planets are anything but fairly round. (Also, artists are apt to go insane when attempting to render multi-zero point three dimensional objects.)

No shortage of beach, I assure you.

Hmm... Wait, does this mean that Blackstar's oceans are actually water?

That is some nice work Embri. Actually, that's some incredible work. I'm sorry I don't have any worthwhile comments to add, but I can't find anything to criticise about it. It may just be the closest thing to perfect I have ever seen.

And I agree that all textures and backgrounds should be made by hand, but it's okay to apply those textures to a 3D object isn't it? So long as you make it yourself, I don't see a problem with it.

Well of course it is. Otherwise how would 3D textured images ever get made?

Im my opinion it's also not totally out of the question to use pre-made textures, if they fit what you want to do.

The problem is when people make pictures (or Creatures add-ons) by doing a rough 3D model and then coating it in one or two standard textures that came with whatever art program they're using. IMO its the modern equivilent of building a picture out of clip art - it limits what you can do, makes everything look the same and means anyone else looking at it can tell instantly how you did it.

Thanks for the compliment. Embarassed As for the "apply to 3-D" question, unless you plan to break out the silly putty, you don't have much of a choice in how to make three dimensional models except with computers. (and personally, I wouldn't really want to try!) Again, the key word here is made by "yourself"(or "a human"). A number of 3-D programs are capable of autonomously or semi-autonomously generating terrain with little or no user input, I direct your attention to Terragen and Bryce. Now, both are excellent programs, and CAN be used to make incredible things that look pretty realistic, but that takes the skilled hands of someone who knows what they are doing. In a competent person's hands, high end 3-D terrain generation programs can produce breathtakingly beautiful scenes.

A lot of the "works" you see generated by those types of programs are in fact little more than a user clicking "Generate terrain" and picking a texture off a list. I should know, I've been there and done that myself, and found the results less than stellar.

Here's an example of what most people do with Terragen:

And here's what a professional does with the same program.

http://www.bestqualitywallpapers.com/Nature/Terragen___The_Way_God_Made_Me.jpg <Full size picture. Warning, large file.

You can *still* tell that the second picture was generated by a program if you look closely enough, but it's of a much higher quality than the first (and sadly, all too common) rendition.
