PLEASE. The registration CAPTCHA sucks something awful. If you don't believe me, try to register an account.
CAPTCHAs should not be case sensitive. Ours is. Too many lower case letters are just scaled-down versions of the uppercase glyph: c and C, o and O, u and U, p and P, w and W, s and S, z and Z, x and X, v and V, and k and K. Further, m and M look alike when warped, Q can become O or o, and j becomes J or i.
I propose that we use the reCAPTCHA. The concept is perfect -- the phrases are taken from books that are being digitized, and the OCR can't read the phrase. By definition, they stop bots, and humans have no trouble reading them.

Doesn't look like it'd be too hard to OCR to me, basic pattern recognition could pick up quite a few letters and a good dictionary check would supply the rest. I think <.<. However, the significant majority of bots are designed for the default captcha, so it doesn't really matter how good or bad it is at stopping bots. Plus, it's a cool idea, and fits in with the whole Blackstar concept of learning, knowledge, and cool techy stuff  .

I thought that too, but apparently OCR really struggles with older printed texts. Add a line through the middle and most OCR programs curl up and spout gibberish.
It's incredible how a somewhat mediocre but not computer generated line can make text oh-so-much harder to break.
Although on this topic, apparently the best CAPTCHAs used anywhere are Google's. Human legible but impossible for many if not all forms of OCR to recognise.

I'm not even sure I would call this a bug -- I think it's a large flaw. Still, I'll keep that in mind for the future.
