"This place is growing crowded..." Goron murmured to himself, then to the rest of the group: "I agree with Danikat... Shadow!"
Through the brush a shadow of a shape crashed. It scampered up through the trees breaking branches with little care for stealth. The bark of the tree shed as the form's scaly skin brushed against the trunk. Craw and teeth reflected the midnight glare, but the remainder of the creature was unable to seperated from the consuming darkness that enshrouded the forest.
The object finally came to a rest, selecting the Owl's branch as a landing zone. Shadow the Grendel came to a halt rather ungracefully, upsetting the Owl's perch.
"Shadow eat grah," he noted, rather absentmindly, to the bird. _________________ ~Goron~

Some bushes nearby the group rustled a little.
Suddenly, a C1 grendel tripped as he exited the foliage he had been using for cover. To the untrained eye this grendel looked no less normal than any other of his kind. However, the fact he had a staff with a blue orb on the end of it and a black, spiral marking on the back of his right hand were both traits that weren't normal to the species.
After getting up, the grendel mage Unguided looked around at the group he had entered the vincinity of. One of the strangest crews he had ever seen.
He remained quiet, because he had no excuse for why he was trying to spy on the group while hiding in some bushes. _________________ TheBlackSoul's Characters

Shavo was getting bored. They didn't seem to be a violent bunch. Well, at least not to each other. So far. But it was to quiet. He was used to quiet, but not outside his home. He decided to take his food down, and eat it there. Shouldering his LLAma and food, he pogoed down to the rest of the group. _________________ Putteh! |

Sabrille judged it to be safe, so she 'shifted. When she was done, all she was wearing was her black leather outfit, the only thing close-fitting enough to shapeshift with her. A quick check ascertianed that her flat blades (knives) were still hidden in the back and sleeves for easy access.
"Hello," she said, unfazed by the man who had suddenly appeared in the tree. "I have been travelling through here, and noticed just the day before yesterday that there were no animals."
Sabrille looked around. "I take it that this place won't be deserted for long, though. But yes, I agree that we need to find out where all the animals are gone."
Sabrille found what she was looking for. Noting its position, she excused herself from the camp and got her clothes, putting them on. When she got back, a quick sleight-of-hand trick quickly assured that she had enough food hidden about her person to last her a day, maybe two or even three if she ate very little. _________________ Characters:

Yet another person hid in the shadows, although she'd taken a slightly different approach to the others hiding in bushes or branches. No, this female was currently attached to the side of a tree, her body oriented near perfectly vertical and her large, bat-like ears pricked, catching the conversation everyone was having by the fire.
Tina had figured this place to be a perfect training ground, as the trees were close enough to allow her to disappear, but not too close that she wouldn't be able to fly with her bat-like wing-arms. They all seemed to be discussing something she'd feared to be true: there was no life here. No animal life anyway, as the plants seemed to proliferate where the animalia had disappeared. Her echolocation had picked up only the breeze moving through branches, and this group, but no animals.
Tina detached herself from the trunk, dropping lightly to the ground, both her black reptilian tail and her mammalian wing-arms helping her to barely make a sound. The scientists who'd spliced her had known what they were doing in their attempts to make her a super-soldier scout, well, right up until the point she and the other experiments had escaped that is.
The woman made her way to the group, lurking around the edge of the campfire, not wanting to get too close. But this was one of the most varied groups she'd ever seen, even here.
"Ssso, where would be the bessst play-sss (place) to ssstart thisss invessstigation? It ssseeemsss we all are ssstuck together"
She spoke up, the fact that she appeared to be missing a few of her front teeth, specifically those where her canines should have been accounting for the way she hissed in her speech. That wasn't the only thing she was missing either, she had no hair on her head. In it's place where her large, bat-like ears, each with a flap of skin from their tips down to the base of her neck. He head was completely human however, although it could be argued her brown eyes seemed more animal than human.
She had wing-arms, that is, her 'actual' arm extended to only about half the length of the wing. Her hands protruded where on a bat there would be a single claw, and a long, thin bone extended from her wrist to the very edge of the wing. For the moment though, the bone and thus the wing itself was folded back, so it almost looked as though Tina had two large soikes extending from her wrists behind her, pointing towards the sky.
She had a tail too, a long, black and scaly thing that was prehensile, and immensely useful for this apparently mixed and matched woman. Bar that, she was human, and wore black clothing to blend in with the parts of her that weren't. _________________ Baker of the radioactive three-eyed flying purple cookie eating brownies!

Shavo was currently looking about twenty-five. He got off his Pogo when he was in the middle of the camp. He got off his pogo and propped it up against a tree. He did the same with his LLAma. Then, without saying a word, un- shouldered his food and began eating. After finishing his mouthful he offered the others some. There was enough for about five people, or a week for Shavo. _________________ Putteh! |

"But surely a creature of the night such as yourself can tell this silence is unnatural?" Danikat countered, as she emerged from the darkness around the campfire, "You have spent more nights amongst the trees than the rest of us, how many of them can you honestly say have been spent in silence, with no calls from other birds, no rustling of little animals in the undergrowth....no, something is very wrong here and I for one would like to know what."
And on that note she turned to the rest of the group, nodding her greetings and eying each one up in turn. "I assume that is the reason we are all here, to find out why no one else is. If you don't mind I suggest we work together." |
The Owl fluffed his feathers, a flash of irritation in his inscrutable eyes.
"And surely you, a creature of the day dwelling a world away, would out-perform a forest-Owl in his natural habitat!" He snorted.
"You with your damned nosing Dasypodidae armada and your flame-belchering skybreakers would be completely attuned to a forest in which you never hunted for food nor never turned to for guidance. Of course, I sense something amiss here!"
He shifted, ever so slightly.
"Why do think I sleep on this perch, eh? For its comfort!? This branch feels different under my talons, grips diffrently to my skin. When I sleep, the puddle of my mind slowly washes into the great sea of possiblity, and things become clearer. Awakening with the emptiness one finds just a few steps outside of eternity leaves an empty mind, ready to be filled whe the floodgates of the toes and eyes and ears let forth the torrent of awareness. I would have divined some semblance of truth from these procedings, had not the twin nitwits of Master Chief and Quasimodo not chosen a more convenient place to frolicksomely fence.â€
The merest flicker of the Owl’s eyes (most likely appearing amber to the observers) noted the shape-shifter’s sudden act of transformation.
So fluid a shift. Most elegant
“Your travels will continue within this rapidly coalescing party, it appears. Many eyes will divine many truths, methinks.â€
The panther-woman’s stark abscondence irked the bird – Why do all who choose to pass through this world have to appear from nowhere and return thence so quickly? – but the new arrival managed to quell any vocalization.
"Ssso, where would be the bessst play-sss to ssstart thisss invessstigation? It ssseeemsss we all are ssstuck together"
“My salutations to you as well, newest-to-come†He spread the sarcasm thinly, as one would spread a conserve delicately over a gentle biscuit. “I would recommend here and now would be the most evident, given the large collection of bodies and minds in this singular place.†His pupils drank in the black ink of this serpentine chiropteran’s body, and his mind relished yet another unique specimen. Echolocation, and a distinct vocal mutation – praise the heavens my ears can foretell such things before my flesh has to feel them!
Yet another new arrival, on Pogo Stick comes forth from the woods, and the Owl truly begins to wonder if Aru’Mauri has gone onto an eighth day of creation, in which Metal Music was fashioned from the void.
The tacit figure, breaking down into a non-sequitur meal, made the Owl twitch at his audacity.. No greeting, barely even acknowledgement of us. I have met my match for aloofness. The dispersal of the food did not comfort the Owl much either; it left him morbidly curious to see if the stuff was laden with arsenic, or some other unpleasant method of eliminating guests through culinary means. I am thankful I lead a charmed life.
“Good morrow, traveller. Have you, too, come to solve the mystery of the apparently vanished biotic community?â€
Moving down a few branches from his perch, the Bird With No Name took a quizzical stance as he looked onwards.

Sabrille accepted the food, and ate it hungrily. When she was done, she carefully dusted off her fingers and stood.
"I say this 'whole escapade' should begin with us learning how widespread this thing is. If you'll excuse me, I'll set up a camp nearby."
She walked a short distance, then took of her clothes. She made sure the food was not easily visible.
Next, she conjured the image in her mind. A hawk? An owl? An eagle? Sabrille finally decided on a hawk, with strong-coloured plumage. Her shatrp eyes made everything seem too close, so she took of.
Riding the thermals, she scouted out the area. It would take a few hours, maybe more, as she could not see life for some distance. _________________ Characters:

Danikat tensed visable at the owl's words, something about what he said clearly bothered her, but she held her tongue and let him finish.

"Well it would seem to me that if we are to work together on this investigation the logical place to begin would be by sharing what we already know. Which in my case is not much I'm afraid. I was sent here on the advice of.....friends, who were concerned with the loss of animal life from an otherwise apparently healthy forest, and since arriving here all I've been able to discover is that they were correct: the only animal life I have seen is standing or sitting around this camp fire. Anyone had any more luck?" _________________ Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve ~ Sir Walter Scott

"Not me. I think the last time I saw life was somewhere in the desert." came Unguided's soft-spoken response to Danikat's question. The C1 grendel took a look around at the rest of the creatures around the fire, awaiting their responses. _________________ TheBlackSoul's Characters

Listening in on the conversation one thing could be said for Kiery. Her head was starting to hurt. At first she had simply stared open mouthed at how fancy the owl talked, but as he continued speaking she became more and more confused until she reached her current utterly befuddled state. However thanks to this she also managed to lose interest in trying to get the many people now gathering at this place lost and confused, having become too confused herself to try. So after quickly rethinking the situation she decided her next course of action should be to get to know these people since they apparently planned on going somewhere that would be more interesting than this. However in her mind this analysis and decision amounted to about this. Wow....that owl talks neat! but it so confusing. What was I doing? I should go say hi to the neat people!
So it was that Kiery quickly fluttered out of her hiding place as Sabrille transformed into a hawk and took off, keeping a close eye on her since a hawk one time almost ate her. Fluttering up to the branch the owl was on she waved and giggled before speaking in her extremely high pitched voice "Hi you talk really neat!" Then doing a backflip and corkscrew midair she turned to face the others standing about the campsite, waving excitedly to them as well before squeaking out a "HIYA!" _________________ My actions speak louder than any words I could ever say.

"All I can tell you is that I have been hunting in these woods for some time now, unable to scavenge even the slightest creature. Blackfoot is the first creature I've seen since I've ventured here."
Come to think of it, I had no real reason for even being in these woods. I had come here on an impulse, and traveled the hollows for a few days now, and found them to be quite devoid of life."
Goron looked around at the group, although he knew that this would divulge no further information. Sighing, he summoned Shadow to his side.
The Grendel, not wishing to return to an earthbound position, dove straight from the branch to a perch on Goron's shoulder. This was not something Goron had expected, and it sent him crashing straight into the ground.
Grinning somewhat, Shadow sat on top of his vanquished foe. _________________ ~Goron~

Unguided studied the other grendel who had dropped out of nowhere and onto another person. This one was a C3-ish grendel, much larger than he was.
Still, it was mildy comforting to see another one of his own species around. Seemed like there was more than one grendel who lived in the Dojo. _________________ TheBlackSoul's Characters

Shavo stretched out after finishing his meal. He sensed that the owl didn't quite trust him. He looked at it, he sensed distrust.
Well placed mis-trust.
“Good morrow, traveler. Have you, too, come to solve the mystery of the apparently vanished biotic community?â€
Shavo's eyes opened a little wider, the only indication of his surprise that it could speak. Choosing his words carefully he replied.
"My intentions are not so selfless. I had originally intended to examine the local wildlife. To see if there were forgotten recipes I could uncover. Upon finding it in this state, I suppose I must try to uncover the truth. A balance must be kept, and I am assume I am right in assuming that this silence is unnatural?"
He began cleaning up the mess of the meal. _________________ Putteh! |
