Hm... I'm not entirely sure what you'd do, as I've never had that problem myself (the result of making up most of my own races ).
It's a tricky situation, as if it's something that a lot of people use (like you said, werecats, wild elves, etc), then obviously different people are going to have different opinions on what they do.
I'd say make a post with your own seperate definition in the same thread and run by what you feel is right. I think that would be better than having 50 seperate threads about popular ones like elves and unicorns, and that way you might get the chance to talk with people who're interested in the same kinds of characters as you (who knows, you might even convince them to change to your definition ). _________________ If I'm not here, I'm probably over at...

Can I sneak this in here? Things like humans and werewolves wouldn't need a thread, no? Most people know what humans are. Werewolves everybody knows. Now (on-topic this is to you), wouldn't were cats (so would werewolves) go under Lycanthrope? Because that's what they are. If in doubt, you could always link to your definition in your sig. So if people get confused RPing with you (I know I have) they can just click the link. You have some worthwhile idea's, so I think that would be good. _________________ Putteh! |

Well in theory everyone knows what werewolves are but theres a lot of variation in the details. Some are always evil, some can be good, some are vulnerable to fire, others to silver, in one book I read they seem to have confused them with vampires and they were vulnerable to sunlight and garlic...
Same with elves. I'd assme Drow and Moon elves would be the DnD variations but I've seen the same names used in other stuff as well, with diffrent abilities and stuff.
It might be worth shifting all that lot over to the Blackstar Wiki so we could have catergories like 'Dragons', 'Elves' ect. and then a page for each variation within that. _________________ Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve ~ Sir Walter Scott

Speaking of werewolves, there's one I've put over in the Repository... mostly because I knew some people would have a problem with Tala, what with being a second generation one so I added my own tweaks.
But that doesn't mean I'm going to moan if someone has their own definition _________________ Baker of the radioactive three-eyed flying purple cookie eating brownies!

Multiple definitions for something by the same name sounds fine, or you could simply add the Cosom or Realm name before the general term if you really have a very different species:
Cybertech Dragon
Oriental Dragon
Vampiric Dragon
Would all probably go under different topics, since they'd share very little in common with each other. If you find an entry for a species/race you'd like to add, read it over first and decide how much it has in common with your own idea/interpretation. If they're similar, simply add an amendment to that topic. One of the wonderful things about the Blackstar world is that beings from all over may exist, even in seeming contradictions. _________________

Do people still use wereboars? Or did that go out with Daggerfall? I always thought it was stupid. But hey! _________________ Putteh! |

I thought that 'lycan' meant 'wolf' _________________ If I'm not here, I'm probably over at...

It was recently suggested that "lycan" is actually a corruption of "polycan" meaning "many fangs".
Wolf is "lupus".

Well, well, if it isn't my arch-nemesis Latinman... But I'm afraid I have the upper hand this time old foe, for I am not restricted to one language as you are! Mwahahaha!
You see, 'lyc-', 'lyco-' or 'lycos-' in Greek means wolf, whilst 'anthropos' means man. The Ancient Greek term for wolfman is lykánthropos, which is very close to the modern day word.
By the very definition of the word, it can only mean werewolf, so you can't really use lycanthrope to describe any were-animal (that's like saying that it's a werewolfcat when you mean to say werecat). Come to think of it, the term 'were' doesn't even come into the equation, I get the feeling that somebody just tacked that on because saying wereboar is slightly cooler than saying boarman.
Anyways, to cut a long story short, anybody who uses the term 'lycanthrope' to describe something other than a wolfman obviously doesn't know what the actual term means (or they think that it's cool, I don't know ). If it helps, catman (or werecat if you insist) is probably something like 'aeluranthrope' (the greek words for 'cat' being aeluro-, aelur-, ailuro-, ailouro-, ailur-, eluro-) and boarman (wereboar) is probably 'hyeanthrope' or something (the greek word for pig/swine is 'hyeni-', 'hye-' or 'hyo-').
What say you now, Latinman? Ready to submit to superior nitpicking? _________________ If I'm not here, I'm probably over at...

Mmm.. wouldn't it be interesting if you two (3kul and Chronos) had a showdown of sorts? Like GBE and Addman in the Egoscript Off? _________________ We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.
