I condemn him with the stern, rational mind of a praetor. This individual has shown wilful contempt and lack of respect to several members on many occasions. Furthermore, some mannerisms demonstrated are inane and non-contributory to the overall atmosphere of the Dojo, i.e. they do not demonstrate sufficient wittiness, depth, relevance or substance to be considered humourous or conversationally provocative.
I would salute him for the subterfuge had he not attempted such a lummox-minded inheritence of his former incarnation's itellectual property and had he demonstrated a degree of maturity beyond that of a deplorably spoiled *happy spices* of the affluent North American lifestyle. I appreciate infltration and furtiveness, even in enemies. However, he has shown nothing but contempt and stupiduty for his fellow Dojodians; I see there is no choice but to banish him a second (and hopefully final) time.
Why, you ask? Why not show mercy like the good and wise souls that we are? Why not set a precident of rehabilitation rather than of retribution? Because we have already attempted rehabillitation. We have politely endured his silliness, reasoned with him when he proved irrational, chided him when his tomfoolery exceeded the bounds of reason, castigated his conduct when transgressing the bounds of decency and still he remains. Were it not for my extreme respect for the due processes insititutionalized by the powers-that-be and the fact that the account is shared (i.e. at least one party 'may' be inconvenienced or unjustly restrained through the use of punative force), I would have eradicated this entity from our servers.
The fact that another party, however phantasmal they may be, still could be inconvenienced or fettered by the use of permabanning creates an ehtical dilemma. Should a potentially innocent party (and young blood into the Dojo) be made to pay for the crimes of another? Is it worth losing two members for the crimes of one? Is it ethical to hamper the freedoms of our users for the sake of security? I would say yes, to all questions.
Firstly, our digital society is far different from that of the real world. Unlike reality, in which its constituents are forced to participate in its function regardless of their desires, participating in Blackstar (or indeed any other web-based world) is an optional process. An individual chooses to log onto our forums and post, premeditating what they do through the process of typing and revision of typed work. Although they may have several contacts and friends within the online-group which they would be isolated from should their account be suspended, they have other means with which to communicate with those parties (e.g. e-mail, live messengers, JR Chat, etc.). A member of this community chooses to join in, there is no party forcing them into participation.
Should a member of a social group prove harmful or detrimental to the well-being of group members, that member is either reeducated, removed, or otherwise dealt with accordingly. With the internet, the medium is unique in that two identities may inhabit the same individual - as is the case with shared accounts. As we have discussed earlier, the problem remains Doctor Lupin Mario's previous behaviour. Since Psychonaut 8 has emerged, the account bears some semblance to the aforementioned DLM. Although the user of the account claims to have been merely a neighbour of the offending entity, there is sufficient evidence to make a reasonable individual believe that the person behind Psychonaut 8 is the same one as behind Doctor Lupin Mario. The supporting evidence makes the prospect of control an effective one to alleviate the problem.
The limitation of individual freedoms for the sake of collective benefit has been employed by liberal democracies for centuries. Prisons and mental correctional insititutions hamper the liberties of their occupants, but few would deny the necessity of these institutions for the benefit of society. The determination of the worthiness of individuals for such facilities is a carefully metered process through which the judicial system carefully determines if the actions commited by the parties in question are indeed in violation of the rules of the society. In the Dojo the same prinicples apply: careful deiberation is employed before punishments are meted. The very fact that there is a thread regarding the discussion of this case is proof enough that we are not tyrants of this niche of cyberspace, but rather thoughtful justicies who meditate on the matter in order to understand it more fully. We are most carefuly in our choices, and will not abuse our powers simply for the sake of infantile shoving-contests.
In shrot, we must do what must be done. We, the judicial extentions of the Dojo, know right from wrong and are not likely to wield our powers wontonly. We know the kind of problems this user has posed us in the past, and we would like to avoid repetition of history. Although perhaps a codification of mod & administrative responsibilities and powers would be an excellent lubricant towards a far-future solution, we have a more pressing problem to contend with. Therefore, I suggest we carry forth our harshest of punishments and eliminate this problematic issue before it grows further and weakens our community's ties even more.

Yep...bribery.
Of course i have no plans of accepting any such funds. He may not, but I still have standards. _________________

Hehehe, let's take his money and then ban him
No? Alright, I'll be serious then .
Well, with his latest post and the information DP's just given us, I'm changing my stance on this thing:

| So, an outright confession. I am still wondering though, was there really another person who you were sharing your account with, or was I wrong about that detail? I was going a bit out on a limb there. The only thing I've known for sure for a while was that you had access to the Psychonaut account. Whether there really was a psychonaut was unsure to me. |
There is actually, And he is typing in the third person right now.
Psyconaut8 = IDDQD |
I'm assuming that "Psyconaut8 = IDDQD" (IDDQD is the code for God-mode in Doom, according to UrbanDictionary.com) is his cute little way of saying 'as long as you don't know if Psyconaut is real or not, I'm safe', and by only addressing Yoshi's post he's further exploiting the fact that we aren't sure as to whether or not Psyconaut is real. Though I may be overestimating him in thinking this, as he's proven to us time and time again that he's not the sharpest tool in the shed.
In any case, he's totally ignored my earlier post (along with almost everyone else who posted around then), and in doing so has failed to fulfil the requirements that I had previously set for him to have a second chance. These were personal requirements (I don't consider them to have any effect on how the rest of you feel), but since he hasn't shown the slightest bit of gratitude or hinted at being apologetic for what he's done I have decided to change my opinion and side with those who wish to ban him.
Even if Psyconaut was a seperate user (which I seriously doubt that he is, given how the e-mail address is for DLM), he's now done more than enough to get himself banned. We warned him not to allow DLM to use his account, which he ignored, and now he's trying to bribe DP to let DLM get his account back - we can hardly call Psyconaut an innocent party anymore.
So unless his next post entails him getting down on his knees and begging for forgiveness, singing praises of our merciful attitude towards him, ect. I'm all for banning the thick-skulled dunce.
EDIT: In regards to your post on specific punishments Embri, I'm in agreeance with Danikat - some of those punishments sound like they wouldn't really affect the average rule-breaker, so they'd be perfect for people who commit specific crimes .
We should probably move the crimes and punishment discussion to another thread though, seeing as it's a pretty good idea to work on. |

One word. Despicable.
The boot! The boot, I say! Cast him out amongst the offal, unfit as he is for this realm! *stomps hoof indignantly* |

I have made a poll on this subject, viewable to the public. I want the full support of the Blackstar Council next time I ban this guy, and I want an example made of him
Trust me, all of this is going into the hall of shame once we are done. _________________

I hope I have a vocabulary like that someday, M'Lord.
I also hope to see this...moron (for substitution of a more vulgar term) banished forever, which I'm sure will be the verdict of the poll. To put all the posts here into one sentence:
His actions are inexcusable, and don't belong here.[/quote] |

Yes I know, its a bad habit I've been trying to get out of for years.
As I said in the poll thread I've now changed my position. I was in favour of giving DLM a seocnd chance in the hope that he would recognise he'd done something wrong and attempt to rectify it. But instead he's done everything short of flat out screaming abuse of members to go as far the other way as possible.
We tried to fix the problem, it didn't work. Now its time to get rid of it. _________________ Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to decieve ~ Sir Walter Scott

Okay for some reason (probably RL boredom) I dragged myself back here.
I'm willing to code stuff again.
Regarding Embri's suggestion of a PM banning tool, it'd be easy to implement a counter of how many PMs are sent by a user per day, etc.
Limited-time bans are also easy. As are avatar bans,
I'd like to know why the item system isn't up, and if I can help. |
AL! *huggles muchly* Missed you!
The item system isn't up because we're getting ready to move over to a new Store System with more features and some pretty neat tools. Should be up soon, within a few weeks at most if all goes well.
The PM ban/Avatar ban is already available through the Admin CP - no need to code it. However, I do have some wishes that could use your touch, expert of all things Cody and PHP. ^_^
It has to do with the sidebar area that shows up when anyone posts - Would it be possible to move [Joined: Posts: Location: Account: Loan:] into the popup profile that you can access by clicking on the poster's name? (some of those fields are already there)
That would unclutter the sidebar a bit and make it shorter, so we have less blank space. Well, that's the idea, anyway. |
