Ok, this made national news at least, and as bad as it was, probably international (to some extent)

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/20/bus.crash/index.html

This is actually in my city. I first found out about it when a co-worker (who's moonlights as a paramedic) got called away. It may only be three fatalities, but in a city the size of ours, everyone is literally one degree of seperation from each other...and with that number of casualties, that makes it even worse.

Terrible as this accident is, I have to say that it's this sentance that shocked me the most. I mean, what possible reason could there be for school buses to not have seatbelts, one of the most basic and essential safety measures for any vehicle?

That matter aside though, my condolences to the families and friends of the three students who were killed or injured.

3kul, that's how things work. In the midwest, even on new buses it is EXTREMELY rare for anyone but the bus driver to have a seat belt. I wouldn't assume a huge difference in the deep south. Just another example of how hypocritical/empty-minded a lot of things are.

Sorry about the crash though.

I've only ever been on one (one) bus with seatbelts. And that was quite a few years ago. Catch a bus next time you need to go anywhere 3kul and there probably won't be any seatbelts there. Then again, it probably depends on where you live.

Oh, I'm aware that most buses don't have seatbelts, I still find it incredibly stupid though. Back when I was in school, whenever we were going on an excursion they'd try to book a bus with seatbelts, and more often than not that's what we took, so it's not like they don't exist.

Sorry to hear DP, just glad that no one you know was on that bus. The fact that it took a tumble off a highway obviously meant there were a high number on injuries.

Some buses in the UK have seatbelts, not public buses but coaches and the like. Although they have seatbelts that they insist you use, but they don't really enforce it and nobody ever really does. The same cannot be said for in cars though, where anyone in a car without a seltbelt will feel the swift, bruising justice of robot police officers with lazer cannons and jackhammer fists. Or perhaps a large fine.

Holy god DP that was your place? D:

Yeah, as a fellow member of the Deep South, our buses do not have seatbelts.

More often than not, the passengers are up and about, in dangerous positions.

This is why I dislike buses. They're flaming yellow deathtraps.

I can't speak for other countries, but in the US they don't have seatbelts by law. In Theory, if something was to happen, the bus driver wouldn't have time to unbuckle and evacuate all the injured people if he had to deal with seatbelts.

of course that is assuming he didn't jump off the bus (and bridge in the same jump) and fall, injuring himself but saving his life (he should of stayed though Mad )

Actually, though they don't have seatbelts or airbags, School busses are really really safe...almost safer than plane travel in fact. They're described as massive yellow tanks sometimes. It's normally attributed to the fact that people pay attention when there's a bus around and keeps their mind on their driving.

This is actually the second school bus crash in huntsville in the past 10 years or so though Sad

In Vermont, we don't have things like that... instead our school buses hit mooses.

They have my sympathies.

We don't have school buses over here. There's normal buses, you get a lift or you walk. But in primary school when we went on school tours there were always seat belts on out school buses. My deepest condolences for what happened DP, I hope no one else passes away...

I'm so sorry DP, there isn't muc more I can truely say.

Our school bus had seatbelts, but only around the waist, and some of the chairs have these weird things NAILED into them, which could rather easily cut open your head. At the front you could simply fall forwards and crack open your heads on the plastic thing there. No bar or anything to hold onto.

Our school bus is a Eurotaxi one, and I can now agree with Sharon: it's a accident just waiting to happen.

Condolences for this terrible tragedy. When I was at school we never had any seat belts and the buses seemed to fall to pieces everytime we all piled onto them. I was glad when I got to college when all I had to worry about was walking. I'd say buses are probably one of the top dangerous modes of travel, but what do I know.

Actually, in the UK, busses are extremely safe (unless Sooty is your driver (private joke Razz )). All of the hired busses for my primary school I used to visit never had seat belts. The busses for secondary school were just public busses, so again, no seatbelts.

Only private coach firms seem to have seatbelts, which are the waist/stomach ones that are actually more dangerous than anything else on the bus.

How often is there a bus crash in the UK, really? We're more likely to have an over-turned potato lorry Razz

In all the time in my town, the only serious bus incident was when a bus driver accidentally drove into a man, only knocking him unconcious. He survived, went to hospital, recovered quite well. The bus driver was shook up.

Anyways, my condolonces to the dead and injured and their families...

Oh, crap. I'm so sorry to hear that, DP! It's always devastating to see something like that; and to have that happen in a smaller city, too....oh, crap.

Sorry you have to deal with that, buddy.
