I disagree with the purgatory phrase, considering Purgatory is actually a place to be feared, a halfway in which you are judged. We don't want to see ourselves as judges or people to be feared.

How about:

When evil creeps out of its dark shadows, a light shines down upon those things of darkness, dispelling their evil wanton destruction. That light is known as The Guardians...

I thought our purpose was to fight anyone, whether they think themselves good or evil, who tries to invade/destroy/corrupt/what have you. To keep the balance between all sides, and oppose whichever force threatens to take over. So whether it was an angelic force bent on annihilating witches and demons, or an evil force spreading wanton destruction, we would resist them.

Not exactly snappy, but that's the basic idea. Or are we not a neutral group anymore? Sad

The lines of good and evil are blurred, when one oversteps their boundaries, the balance has to be restored. The Guardians are that balance...
