Considering I'm living on a student loan right now I probably shouldn't be suggesting this but what about some sort of subscription or donation system to "encorage" people to help out with the hoasting costs?

It just seems a bit unfair that you have to pay the full cost when we get as much out of this site as you do (and for less work).

I was just thinking something similar Dani, but how many people would be willing to put in donations? I'm not sure, DP would either be rolling in everyone's money (perhaps a lot of the Blackstar peeps love the forum enough to pay for it), or everyone will turn their noses up at it.

Also, you've got to consider that a good majority of Blackstar's users are minors, therefore they may not have a credit/debit card or a parent who'd be willing to put in a few pennies. Just a few things to consider really.

It does seem a little unfair that DP would have to put up his own money for this though.

Also, DP, if you find an affordable yet decent webhost, could you let me know? I'm in the market Very Happy

True that the majority of our users are minors, but not all of them are.

Personally, I've already offered to assist with Blackstar's financial costs, though I have to twist DP's arms some more to get him to accept!

Three people in the past 12 hours has suggested that they help me with hosting cost....

Embri might not have to twist that much harder if this keeps up...though I don't know how many one-time-only donations we'll get, and how many repeat offenders we'll get.

Just so you know, Addman, the best I've found is Godaddy.com, the absolute top-of-the-line hosting plan cost about $16(US) per month, and goes down with longer commitments.

Also, their cheap plan is just $4(US) per month...and has 250GB transfer. For those keeping tabs, thats over 50 times what the entirety of Inkwell gets. Their cheap plan also comes with 500 email accounts. The only thing I don't like about it is the space available for storage...I'd like to host this site, a wiki, and give everyone a decent limit on email, and that space just doesn't allow it.

That's quite a bargin, although a bit pricy to be paying for by yourself. (If you're concidering the first option).

Pfft... I regularly spend about 10$ a month on on-line forums/games, so I have little problem switching over my support to Blackstar instead.

Well I recently moved from paying $2 a year to a one-time only payment of $20 for another website. And the only online game I (would) play is free.

So I really wouldn't mind paying for Blackstar. Afterall this is basically an online game, or an entire mass of them.

I'd forgotten to take the age of members into account, obviously charging a subscription for the site wouldn't work, but even with just those of us who have already volunteered to pay a share of the costs it shouldn't come to much at all to keep this place running.
And if it means we get the good hoasting its worth it.

And since carnadine.co.uk is hosted in my house, I pay Ã‚Â£5 a year ($10) for infinite bandwidth (Well BT tries to limit it and fails miserably) and space (Only limited by how big one hard drive can be (with my current setup). Which is 300GB right now as far as I know, for IDE. I know about the 500GB SATA drives though)

Currently carnadine.co.uk is hosted on Phoenix (Previously Leviathan), a Dell Optiplex GX400 (I think) with a 1GHz processor and 128MB RAM. The hard drive has a 20GB capacity. That won't get any bigger for a long while.

I may as well now take this topic completely off the rails and tell you all about Hades, my newest computer. Built mostly from stuff bought new from shops, but (currently) a graphics card from my Dell Dimension (Mog), tape drive from a Dell at my dad's workplace so old it's beige, and a CD drive stolen from the Compaq (Kjata) I previously used for everything, it's a 2.2GHz AMD 64 with two cores and 2GB of RAM.

The story about the hard drives is quite interesting. This happened after I had started collecting parts for Hades.

A while ago my dad's workplace presumed a computer's (20GB) hard drive dead, so got another one from their work. My dad brought the old one home for me to use in Hades. Later they decided the whole computer was rubbish, and left it in an unused office, where they keep all their old crap.
Phoenix is that computer. I got my dad to bring it home. It had the new 80GB hard drive in it so I decided to set Phoenix up as a server with the 20GB hard drive it originally had, and have the 80GB hard drive in Hades.

Back on topic, if you guys need any help with DNS on the new blackstar, give me a call Very Happy

Oh and by the way be sure to make a wiki.blackstardojo.com or whatever, because wiki.whatever is way more HARD CORE LOOKING (And easier to type.)
