ENOUGH!

I go to sleep and you spend all of my night bickering! That's just insulting.

Not all powers rely on the Mobius continuum. There are many types of powers. We are just suggesting a theory on how magical powers work (because, quiet frankly, spontaneous generation of energy clashes with what we know to be fact about how the universe works).

Shadowviel, this thread, nay, this section, is about coming together and trying to piece together a coherent theory of how certain things that are paralleled by many characters work, and to showcase new technologies people are introducing into the world. Not to say "Well That's not going to work for my character and I can't explain why." From everything you've described, personally, it works well with the theory.

You want your race to a capacitor or battery, I'll bite. But I should warn you, I"m a Computer Engineer, you've officially stepped onto my turf.

A Capacitor is in it's simplist form, to metal plates seperated from each other by some non-conductive material. It stores electrical energy by storing charged particles on the surface on one plate. This produces an electric field, which causes any charged particles with the same charge to vacate the other plate, causing the other plate to become oppositely charged.

For a Capacitor to hold any energy, though, it must first be charged by a potential difference (otherwise known as Voltage, or potential energy). So for your race, where is your Voltage coming from?

IF you choose a battery, it formes a Voltage across it's two leads by a reaction of chemicals known as a Reduction-Oxidation reaction (RedOx for short). In these reactions, one atom loses some electrons to a atom attached to a hydrogen atom in an acid. This causes the atom that was attached to the hydrogen to no longer by, and the atom that wasn't attached to now be attached. In a battery, the electron transfer is directed through a wire and whatever resistance you have hooked up to it, be that motor, light, or mp3 player.

So, where is your races chemical reaction? Non-existant, because they are an energy being.

so, those to points aside, where does their energy come from to not violate the law of conservation of energy?

And then there's the Ryft, which could contrast with all the other theories or co-exist happily. Feel free to accept it or reject it.

The Ryft consists of "white void" - theoretically, there shouldn't be anything there, yet any being can exist in there without suddenly dying due to asphyxiation, or suddenly freezing, or boiling.
There exists many theories and hypothesises on why this is - a strongly-followed theory so far on Meles is that upon distending a gateway into the Ryft, the atmosphere of the place where the gateway was summoned flows into the Ryft, and forms a "bubble" around the traveller while they pick out another gateway.

The fact that creating a gateway usually seems to suck air and energy in is strong evidence for this theory to be true. The fact that air and energy is released upon leaving the Ryft also favours this theory. However, as of yet no-one has been able to say why this atmospherical pocket forms around the traveller, and why it doesn't just diffuse in the otherwise empty Ryft.

The Ryft is infinite, yet it also theoretically links to an infinite number of points in an infinite number of infinite universes. How this is even possible is inconceivable to those who cannot truely comprehend infinity, and so if asked about this most scholars say something to the extent of "It's magic."

However, the reason the Ryft can be used for quick transport is the fact that the corresponding points change, so if two points are far away in one universe they may be directly touching in the Ryft. Common sense would indicate that if point-correlations constantly change, it would be impossible to know where you were going, but the changing of points is vaguely predictable, in the same manner as the motion of fluids is vaguely predictable. The exact destinations of potential exits at certain times can be calculated, but can take days to work out accurately, and sometimes weeks, if not months. Highly experienced Ryft users (such as Cirrial) can easily predict and time their exits out of the Ryft to arrive at, or very near, their destinations.

Add into the equation the fact that the Ryft isn't exactly the most stable of things. Flotsam and debris can fall in and out of the Ryft by gateways spontaneously forming without a conscious agent behind the action, usually in areas where the fabric of existance is weak or highly unstable. These are usually assimilated into swirling grey maelstroms of matter and energy that are constantly moving through the Ryft, some the size of a small table, the others larger than planets.

So, in short, while the Ryft is the most efficient way of travelling from point A to point B, it is far from the safest and most reliable. Many of those who have tried to use the Ryft without a clue as to what they were doing either arrive on the wrong planet, or even the wrong universe. More likely, however, is that they would get pummeled to death by a maelstrom, their component molecules then being assimilated into it.

I disagree - not in an unpleasant manner - Cirrial, that the ryft is the most efficient way to travel from A to B.

The Mobius Continuum has every door to anywhere and anywhen... And, if, you can fully manipulate the the continuum, you can summon doors to you of where you wish to go.

But, as time doesn't actually pass by within the Continuum, unless you're near an open door, you can travel and view every door, although, heat and cold from different environments will affect you, until you find the door you are looking for.

So unless you know where you don't know where you are going, it is an incredibly fast way to travel if you can manipulate it.

As for Shadowviel, I understand that everyone has their own unique ideas for their characters, and everyones characters are precious to them. Mine are to me when I know they can work. But, as it is, I have occasionally cut powers, or edited powers in order to fit in with a) powerplay rules, b) theories and facts and c) other peoples ideas converging with mine...

But as it is, DP for all I know has just exploded my brain with scientific fact, which, because of my lack of knowledge, am inclined to agree to the utmost... Razz

But, also, 3kul made some extremely good points, and I thank him for at least trying to understand this current theory, and trying to explain, peacefully, what he thinks.

I haven't been able to see a reasonable argument from you Shadowveil apart from the fact you want your characters the way they are. Who am I to argue, but in rp's people change their approach all the time when they see sense, including myself. Those who don't, tend to be ostracised....

I don't think I need to explain anything in this case, other than I wish that we can all come to a fair agreement, and carry on peaceably...?

As for Mr. Flamey's fire organ, I fully understand that, and yes, that would fall outside of the rules of the Mobius Continuum providing the organ is there. As is the case, I belive with dragons.

If there are natural organs, that can create something, like said fire, then feel free to play outside of The Continuum, although, then the said powers are limited because obviously, natural resources run out.... Smile

I'm open to further discussion.... Anyways, considering the amount of views, I can't see if anyone has a problem with this working theory, so i'm going to set up a poll.... Then, if people vote no, I'll be asking why....

_____________________________________________________

Further Notes On The Mobius Continuum:

DP's Warp Portal:

I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but I am positive DP did outline and flesh this next paragraph or two...

When anyone portals from one point to another (by the way, I love that little mention of two portals opening, to locate the base coordinates, and gain additional power Smile ) a wall is formed inside of The Continuum, that is in theory penatrable, but would cause severe problems for all involved.

As it is, based on Stargate: SG1, and Goron/DP's backstory for 18, if enough power is fired, surged or charged at the portal's opening, it can be forced to jump to a random new location, which could be at any distance to the original point of exit, or it could cut out completely. And being lost in The Continuum, is not pleasant.....

A brief idea of what the continuum looks like, is the infinity symbol:

^ that's the symbol there...

Now, it can be untiwsted, to various degrees of effects for the individual. I'm going into great detail based on this right now, but it requires a full understanding of the character in question, and full ability to manipulate the Continuum.

I am sorry for any offence I have caused. I merely wanted to show my own ideas. As they have brought nothing but misunderstanding, I will delete the relevant sections of my posts.

I wasn't offended, just wanting to see your side of a well balanced argument is all. But between DP and 3kul, I'm not sure there is one for you..... Shocked Razz

On hindsight, I should have probably clarified. The Ryft is the most efficient way to travel known by the Melesi, but the Mobius Continuum is far more efficient.

Time in the Ryft doesn't stand still, but is more like alternating current, going back and forth, but with a positive trend (ie. tends to go forwards). This means that despite the speed of entering and exiting, you may end up a few hours late, or even a few days too early. This doesn't mean the Ryft can be used for time travel though, as the extremes of time in relation to universes are one day out at best.

Still, arriving early by one day can mean all the difference.

For even the most seasoned Ryft veterans, this chronological fluctuation is as predictable as radioactive decay - it's going to happen, but it's not known when it's going to happen. It's not uncommon, therefore, for people to ask the date and time when they arrive at their intended destination.

It could be theorised that the Ryft isn't an entirely different entity to the Mobius Continuum, but perhaps an aspect, a facet, or even a point of view. (I haven't decided on this myself.)

Well, the Portaler's idea is to get the shortest wormhole to span the required length to get from is current locale to the destination. This isn't always easy because locations in the Warp are independant of locations inside the Multiverse.

The Portals are succeptable to fluctuations in it's power supply, either brought on by a burst of energy hitting it's event horizon, or a poor power source. The effects of thse fluctuations are chaotic at best. As GBE said, the destination can jump locations, or the portal can shutdown entirely. And if your inside the wormhole when a fluctuation hits...it's not pretty. As GBE said, this is refered to as being Stuck inside the Warp.
