Magic, in all forms, can be broken down to two things: Force and Energy.
To cause a volcano to erupt, one must simply apply force to the magma and push it upwards. This is an example of a small amount of force used to devestating effect.
To push your way into the immortal realm is different entirely. It requires not only force but the adequate aplication of energy to direct that force. Force on it's own can only do so much, and whilst powerful on it's own it cannot defy the laws of our natural universe. This is where energy comes in, producing a field where reality is distorted thereby allowing force to be used for a previously impossible task.
Now, this coagulation of force and energy must come from somewhere, and it's usually the mage's body. However, this is not always the case as energy/force can be stored in all kinds of places, including gems and other exotic materials. Let us use Chronos's 'Blade of Time' as an example:
The blade can manipulate the space-time continuum to a point where it atually enters a state of 'reverse time', a feat impossible to even Net himself. However, this requires so much energy that it would kill even Chronos to do so. Therefore, the gem on the hilt of the blade is used to store energy for usage when the blade is activated. Upon activation, the blade will draw upon the vast store of energy in it's gem-studded hilt and use it (along with the blade-holder's inner energies) to acomplish this previously impossible feat.
The standard unit of energy/force is 'Mana'. Everyone has a small amount of 'Mana' in their being, which can be channeled for the purpose of 'magic'. However, if one attempts to use too more Mana than they can possibly sustain, they will perish as the forces involved will draw their energy from the caster's very soul. Thus is the danger of the so-called 'Magic'.
Mana can be channeled from other sources, but it requires both participants to be mentally suceptible to such actions. This is how a Parasitian 'Disciple' can draw energy from a spirit in the usage of a charm, or how twins can sometimes communicate telepathically.

Feel free to add to my theorim as to what magic actually is. Essentially: Magic can be channeled in many ways, but in the end it's all the same: Force/energy. It is possible to master a way of manipulating magic, but practically impossible to manipulate all forms of magic as they are too numerous to understand simultaniously. |
