Which Threads are Medal Worthy?

I've been batting around a couple of ideas over what threads are going to get medals, and two possiblities which seem fair have come up. It would be most undemocratic for me to just choose, so I'd consider either of these pretty fair:

1. Hold a monthly poll for the best threads, and let everyone decide which ones should get a medal associated with them.

2. Set up a group of rules which would automatically make a thread medal worthy... probably something like this:

Thread has reached x number of pages (I'm leaning towards five or more)
Thread has at least x number of people participating (At least 10?)

So, my fellow Dojodians, which would you prefer? Or perhaps you have a better idea you'd like to share?

Of course, neither of these options would stop special threads from being considered for Medal status even if they don't fall into these criteria. You are all welcome to nominate threads the normal way, through the suggestion box.
