Character Depth
It would be a day to remember for the 12-year old female.
Today, her parents were sending her to a place called "Blackstar Dojo," where she would be taught the ways of Fire Magic. From what she'd heard, she had an affinity to the element Fire, but needed training to actually use the powers related to it.
Right now, she had on a simple, black shirt with short sleeves, and jeans. There were no shoes on her feet right now.
She had bright, green eyes, although her left eye was invisible, due to the lock of shimmering, pure black hair covering it.
Her parents, currently conversing with the pair that would serve as her foster parents when she arrived in the Dojo, weren't very clear to her, for some reason.
She stared out the window of her old home, at the grassy fields stretching as far as she could see. On this day, those would be things of the past. Where she was going, the scenery would be nothing but bare sand, the desert of the Dojo's Southern Frontier.
"It is time to go now, Tamae. Please try to take care of yourself," said her father, interrupting her thoughts.
Following her foster parents, a strange, white light blinded her as she stepped outside...
----------------------
She opened her eyes after awaking from her dream. The light that had appeared at the end was, in fact, the blinding light of the sun shining through the hole in the top of the hut, the beam right in her eyes.
Squinting, she arose, taking in the now-familiar scenery of a fire demon hut. Her bed was nothing but a piece of soft hide, the blanket another, larger section of hide. The hut itself was constructed of durable sandworm skin. Other than the bed/blanket, the hut was empty, except for a piece of flat glass that Tamae had made herself and used as a mirror, and a heap of black fabric lying by the door.
After blinking several times to regain her eyesight, she got up and looked into it.
Her dream had showed her what she had looked like in the long-forgotten past. Her looks now were considerably different.
After 4 years among fire demons, the green in her eyes had changed to blood-red. Each eye had a black patch over it, resembling a half-inch thick black ring around the eye when open. Her once-black hair now had a red streak running down the middle.
Her abilities had changed, as well. Now, she was able to control sand without touching it, utilizing it to attack her foes, defend herself, or to create formidable sand golems.
She also had learnt to clone herself up to 6 times, giving her yet another advantage in combat.
And, the fire abilities she had been told she'd gain in her dream were actually hers to control, thanks to the shaman of the Desertblaze Demons.
Her personality had also changed-once, she was friendly, sociable, and eager to make friends. Now, she was vicious, and would not hesitate to kill.
Things have changed a lot between then and now, she thought.
Then she thought of her real parents, and remembered that in her dream, she couldn't see them that well, since they had been concealed in shadow and smoke.
She'd never been close to her foster parents. When they were slain, she had left their house without so much as a tear. But when she left her real parent's house-for the first couple weeks in the Dojo, she had missed them. Even now, she missed them. What had become of them? What would they say if they saw what had become of her now?
These thoughts moved her deep inside, causing a tear to roll down her cheek.
Noticing this in the mirror, her moods changed.
Crying isn't acceptable anymore!
"Hey Tamae, Breakfast is-"
"AGGH!" screeched Tamae, creating a fist of sand careening out of the sand floor of the hut and smacking into a adolesecent fire demon who had appeared at the doorway, sending him flying and crashing into the hut opposite of hers.
Snapping to her senses, she realized what she did and ran outside, looking at the demon she had hit. He was lying on his back, apparently dazed.
Then he recovered and got up.
"Jeez! When are you going to learn to actually control that ability?" he asked, irritated.
"When people start paying attention to my privacy," hissed Tamae, and she retreated back into her hut, leaving the demon none the wiser.
Shrugging, he walked away. |
