I've got a dilema comming up: I'm well on my way to finishing the storyline segment of Pearl. After which I plan to try and get all the Pokemon I can onto that cartridge.

But in order to do that I have to buy a version of the two games I skipped in between Silver and Pearl. I've already decided I'm going to get Fire Red because of some weird loyalty to my old Red version (which I still play when I'm feeling nostalgic) and because it matches the Charmander I will be using in-game.

But I don't know wether to get Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald. Sapphire would match the Mudkip I'll be using in-game but I suspect Emerald would be the smart choice because the 3rd version of each game usually has some advantageous changes made to it.

So to get to point of all this I want to ask what version everyone would recommend I get and why.

To be completely frank and honest I'd avoid R/S/E altogether if I had the choice, because they are horrible games. Absolutely horrible. But, if you really need to choose, get Emerald. Sure, there are some Pokémon you still won't be able to get, but I'd say it's the least annoying of the three.

I have Ruby myself because they were going cheap and I thought it'd be fun. Oh, how wrong I was.

*shudder*

The game is horrible to look at and horrible to play. There are too many HMs, the new Pokémon for the region are crap and it tries too hard to be edgy and different from the rest of the series by adding crapheaps of poorly-implemented new features.

Many of these features are in D&P as well, but they're properly in there, rather than seeming tacked-on like they did in R/S/E.

Believe me, you'll hate it when you play it, too. You just will. Then you'll get the Pokémon you want, and be relieved that you never have to look at the games ever again.

R/S/E aren't that bad, Vegeta... geez.

Emerald does have additional features, so it's the best choice if you want to get a copy from that generation, however you don't need *any* of them.

You can get every single pokemon on D/P through trading, without needing any additional carts.

I didn't realise that.

Although between the trouble I'm having with my wi-fi and general curiosity I might get them anyway.
