Just got back inside (at around 4:50 AM) because someone caused a small fire (probably burnt popcorn) in the dorms where I live. Not a bad thing in itself, but the alarm was a bit uncomfortable since only Thursday we had a cold snap, causing it to snow (or rather sleet so much as to have the same effect of snow -white powdery FREEZING goodness. Empahsis on FREEZING). There have been pranks over the semester with this stuff, but my dorm's pretty calm, so this one was more likely to be real. took the time to get pants, but still had to go outside in snow and on ice, barefoot. After talking to a few people, it turns out everyone had been sleeping for less than 2 hours (if they'd gone to sleep yet).

Odd how snow's colder than ice....

One funny thing was how everyone just got to the exit of our dorm and stopped. If and when the building collapsed or showed obvious signs of fire, we'd leave. Otherwise we'd all stay where we wouldn't die of frostbite Wink, thank you very much! We weren't outside long at least, since we got let into the elementary school across the road and circle drive. Amazing how much faster you can walk when you're feet are freezing.

Afterwards went up to a friend's room to chat (figured nobody would be frisky 2 minutes after the evacuation) and walked in on something awkward. Than god I knocked first. Nothing horrible to witness, but talk about awkward. Left within 5 minutes. Did find out a funny story about how a fire alarm in another dorm from just before the snap was caused by my friend's friend.

The joy's of college! Just felt like sharing really. If anyone else has fun stories about disasters/false alarms feel free to post them here!

Awkward, eh? Didn't you learn anything from last year's Christmas party?

***

Kat: Oh hey guys. Guys? What are you doing?
Fort: Uh... Nothing <.< >.>.
Kat: ...Is that my underwear?
Fort: ...No.
Kat: What's it say on the tag?
Fort: Kat-Oh damn.
Kat: More importantly, why is Net taking photos of you posing in my underwear?
Net: Yeah baby, be a tiger! Yeah! Great! I'm sure we can fix that in photoshop. Hey, Kat! You want a part in the new movie too? It's called Antlers in Seattle. You'll love it Wink!
Kat: 0.0 No... No thanks... Just drop them off at the dry-cleaners tommorow...
Net: You mean the incinerator?
Kat: Umm... Yeah... Whatever... *Runs*
Net: ...Meh. Now show me what those antlers can do!

***

Actually, I'm going to stop that there before I further destroy whatever innocence remains in the children of today's society.

pfft, who wants innocence? The sooner they learn the sooner they get over it.

Kat I sympathise whole-heartedly. The fire alarms have been driving me nuts ever since I got back to uni. I never had a problem with them before because my first and second years I was living in real houses (sort of), so there were only 6-8 people to set the alarm off, and as far as I know the only person who ever set fire to anything was me (funny story, maybe I'll tell it some time).

This year I'm in halls and it goes off at least every couple of weeks. Most annoyingly the night I'd realised I always seemed to be tired so I went to bed at midnight instead of about 2am. Then it went off about 3am and I had to drag myself outside in sandals and my pyjamas.

Wink What month? I almost envy the House that had their pulled three times. THAT was when it was warm, and most of those pranksters dropped out. Still glad about not getting that ghetto house though. Who wants to live in a place where the stairs get peed on? 'Specally with no elevator....

Nasty! Almost makes me think twice about wanting to live in residence. Almost.

I had fun with the fire alarms at school Thursday. Law class was about to begin and, rather than interrupt the class some time down the road, I decided to visit the washroom. Not being simply a call to the urinal, I settled into a clean stall (the only one on first floor Mad ) and did my business. In the middle of things, a loud ringing exploded through the building. After a few seconds of confusion, it clicked: fire drill. Finishing my business, I flushed and made my way to the sink to wash up. In comes the custodian: "There's an alarm, you've got to get out!"
"I still have to wash my hands."
"It's better to have dirty hands than be dead!"
Grudgingly, I made my way out. Ten minutes later, the alarms were shut off and I made my way back into the washroom, where I washed my hands and was marked late. Good times! Wink

Funny storiesabout fires?

My friend thought it to be a joke if he tried seeing how much cooking oil it would take to set the sausage on fire, just like in the advert for a programme called Braniac. I do not know what happened next due to his babbling about the subject, but it seems that as he poured more on the sausage caught fire indeed, but he found that it was getting too hot for him to handle, so he tried flipping it about a bit. He forgot he had a thatched roof. He also forgot that at the time, he lived with his parents in a bungalow. Put two and two together= The sausage throws flaming oil into the thatched as he throws the sausage and it catches fire.

Ouch.

Reminds me of the time in my first year when I managed to set fire to an empty frying pan.
Well, I say empty but it did have a thin layer of sunflower oil in it, and about 10 seconds later it would have had chicken in it as well. But it wasn't to be.

I'm still not entirely sure what happened exactly but one minute I had a nice hot frying pan and was turning around to get the chicken. Next thing I know theres a quiet 'wwhom' noise and I turn back to see a frying pan full of fire. Genius that I am my first thought was "It wasn't much oil, I'll just turn the heat off and it'll burn itself out soon."
About a minute later that changed to "Maybe I should wait outside, away from the smoke."
Luckily for me (and my house) on my way to the door I noticed the fire blanket and realised that might possibly be a better idea. So I threw it over the fire and then went outside to get away from the smoke.

A minute or two later I ventured back in, confirmed the fire was out and deciding this was too big of a job for the extraction fan I opened all the windows, and the door and the window in the hall.

Luckily for me my housemates were all out so I had time to let the smoke clear and take a shower to get the smell off before they came home.

Come to think of it I don't think I ever told them it happened. Laughing

I pulled the alarm once. It was an accident... I swear! <.< >.>

Nobody ever caught me, and this is the first place I've ever told anyone about it. Convieniently enough, the next class I had, I had forgotten to do my homework in, and I didn't get to go to it that day... of all the weird circumstances, huh?

Every thursday morning without fail they just had to conduct fire alarm tests. They would blast them out for all to here about three times so at this point everyones awake. That was my first year at university, living in halls. Good thing was in the first term I had an early lecture so I wouldn't have to hear this annoying phenomenon.

On this same year someone burnt some toast making the fire alarm go off. Who cooks toast at 5:00 in the morning?

Uhhh....no idea.

But in my second year I lived with someone who would come home at around 2am and decide to bake stuff. Amazingly enough she never set anything on fire and we'd wake up in the morning and find cookies or something in the kitchen with a sign saying 'EAT ME!'.
Which is always a good way to start the day.

*hides toast*

The morning cookie idea sounds awsome! Probably not good for anyone trying to have a healthy lifestyle though... Wink

Surprised You have a slightly odd university. The people I know at my Uni make a pretty good effort to exercise and eat decently (to make up for other things like party nights andsmoking). It kinda balances out, really.

You have an even odder university. Most people I know eat unhealthily then wash it down with some beer. Not many people smoke though so it kind of balances that out. Very Happy

My university it varies actually.

My first year I lived with a girl who seemed to eat nothing but raw or steamed veg and philidelphia on crackers.
But then I also lived with a guy who ate nothing but tinned pies (I didn't even know they existed!) and ready meals.

I tend to stick to various forms of curry, chinese food, mexican, and pizza of course. But I make it myself so I like to think it balances out.
